Respect Your Elders - Change The Date

Respect Your Elders - Change The Date

Hi friends,

We want to ask something small - but meaningful.

Australia Day lands differently depending on where you stand. For some, it’s a moment of pride and celebration. For others, especially First Nations people, it marks the beginning of deep loss — of land, culture, safety, and family. Both realities exist at the same time.

Up here, you learn to live with that truth. You can’t rush past it. You sit with it long enough to understand that unity doesn’t come from holding onto a date, but from choosing consideration over habit.

Changing the date isn’t about erasing history or blaming anyone. It’s about making space for honesty. About choosing a day that invites everyone in, rather than asking some Australians to endure pain so others can celebrate.

Sometimes progress doesn’t come from big gestures, but from quiet decisions made together. A willingness to pause. To listen. To adjust course.

If this resonates with you, I encourage you to sign the Change the Date petition. It’s a simple action — but enough simple actions can gently shift the direction we’re heading.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and for holding space for the idea that we can do better.

With Love,

House of Darwin
