Hoop Dreams Daguragu

Honouring Legacy Through Community Led Design

Daguragu holds a unique place in Australia's history.

Known globally as the home of the Gurindji people's fight for land rights and the legacy of the Wave Hill Walk-Off, Daguragu represents resilience, self-determination and the enduring strength of Aboriginal leadership. The actions of Vincent Lingiari and the Gurindji people helped reshape the national conversation around land rights and justice, creating a legacy that continues to inspire generations today.

It is this spirit of community ownership and self-determination that sits at the heart of the Hoop Dreams program.

House of Darwin's Hoop Dreams initiative works alongside communities across Australia to co-design and deliver sporting and recreational spaces that reflect local identity, culture and aspirations. Rather than imposing solutions, the program places community voices at the centre of the design process, creating spaces that foster pride, participation and long-term stewardship.

In Daguragu, this approach carried particular significance.

Working closely with community members, Elders and young people, the project sought to create more than a basketball court. It aimed to establish a space that celebrates the community's history while providing opportunities for future generations to connect, play and thrive.

Through a series of workshops and engagement activities, local stories, perspectives and creative ideas informed the final design. Community members played an active role in bringing the court to life, contributing to both the creative process and the physical delivery of the project.

The completed court stands as a reflection of the values that have long defined Daguragu: pride, resilience, community and self-determination.

For House of Darwin, Hoop Dreams is about more than infrastructure. It is about creating places that strengthen connection, encourage participation and leave a lasting sense of ownership within communities. By involving people in the design and delivery of these spaces, the program helps build environments that are respected, protected and actively used for years to come.

The Daguragu court is a powerful example of what can be achieved when communities lead the process. It honours a remarkable history while investing in the next generation, ensuring that the legacy of resilience and self-determination continues to inspire long into the future.
