ABC IN THE NT
ABC in the NT is a children’s book celebrating the magic, colour and character of the Northern Territory through the alphabet.
From ferries and fishing spots to crocodiles, markets, monsoons and red dirt adventures, each letter captures a place, animal or experience that helps tell the story of life in the Top End. Created to spark curiosity and pride, the book brings Territory culture, landscapes and everyday moments into classrooms, homes and bedtime routines across Australia.
But creating the book was about much more than finding 26 words that started with the right letters. We wanted every page to feel unmistakably Territorian. Something that children and people who live here would recognise and identify with, and something that would give children elsewhere a little glimpse into our extraordinary corner of the world.
So, we hit the road.
Our team travelled down the Stuart Highway, out of Darwin soaking up the landscapes, stories, people and places that make the Territory what it is. We went looking for inspiration in the places we know and love, and in the unexpected moments that only reveal themselves when you slow down and really look around.
For us, these aren't just places on a map. They are the places where we live, work, explore and make memories. They are part of our everyday lives and part of the stories we tell our children.
Designed with a playful local spirit, ABC in the NT is a love letter to the people, places and adventures that make the Northern Territory unlike anywhere else in the world.
We believe every child deserves the opportunity to discover the joy of books and the confidence that comes from being a reader. Supporting literacy in our young people means helping children build the skills, imagination and curiosity they need to learn, participate and dream big.
Our support and advocacy for youth literacy is grounded in the belief that books should reflect upon the people who read them. Local stories, local places and familiar experiences can help children see themselves in the pages of a book, while also opening the door to a wider world of ideas and possibilities.
